Pysanky (Ukrainian eggs) by Stephanie Cheeseman | Pysanky Steph

Frequently Asked Questions

Please feel free to contact me to answer specific questions about workshops and events.  Below are some answers to frequently asked questions related to my work and workshops, but are subject to change, and I am happy to discuss any of these items with you.

Grace T.

(Group Class / Fundraiser)

"Attending Steph's pysanky class was an egg-cellent experience! Her exceptional knowledge of the art form and techniques, coupled with her passion and patient guidance, make her classes an absolute must for anyone exploring the world of pysanky."

What ages and skill levels do you teach?

I learned to make pysanky very young myself with just scribbles on the egg, and I am happy to teach all ages and skill levels.  I have experience teaching children as young as 2 years old through adults.  When you contact me, we will talk about what your workshop or event will look like in terms of ages and skill levels to determine the right size of the class, chaperone requirements for children, and pricing.

I am able to teach the traditional wax-resist technique as well as vinegar etching of eggs.  Contact me for a custom class!

DO YOU SELL YOUR UKRAINIAN EGGS (PYSANKY)?

I sell my pysanky as part of fundraisers seasonally.  Since 2022, Made in ALX in Alexandria, Virginia has been hosting my pysanky as the lead guest maker for a fundraiser sponsored by The Critical Mass LLC, an Alexandria based company.  Made in ALX is also a location where I teach classes!  Funds from pysanky sales and workshops are raised for Razom for Ukraine.  Keep in touch so that you're the first to know when they are available!

HOW LONG IS A TYPICAL WORKSHOP?

I recommend a workshop length of 2 hours.  Most people are able to make an egg in this time and I will help you stay on pace as much as possible.  I will need access to the space at least 30 minutes before the event for set-up and for at least an hour after the event for clean up.

WHERE DO YOU TEACH?

My workshops come to you!  I teach in the Northern Virginia area, primarily in Fairfax County.  If you have another location in mind, contact me and we'll talk it through!  I bring all of the supplies needed for the class.

You would provide for the space, whether it be your home, a church, a private venue, or whatever you choose, as well as the tables and chairs.  The space must be able to have candles, melted wax, and permanent dyes, and must be able to accommodate the number of participants with room for the dye station.

IF I'D RATHER HAVE A DEMONSTRATION OR A DIFFERENT KIND OF EGG CLASS, CAN YOU DO THAT?

Absolutely!  I would gladly lead a discussion and show a practical demonstration of the process of making pysanky, either in a formal or informal way.  I'm also able to work with you based your skill level or interests to incoprorate more advanced techniques like washing back color or etching with vinegar (travlenky) if appropriate.

I teach pysanky in the spring (the traditional time of year), but also all year round.  Before Christmas a popular choice is to have workshops where your completed egg is turned into an ornament.
